Description
Brighton Motorsports is please to present this well-preserved 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu “396-SS” Convertible. This beautiful car has just 23,365 miles showing on the odometer.
This is a very highly optioned car, making it perfect for touring, driving and enjoying for both short and longer drives. It is equipped with automatic transmission, power front disc-brakes (rear drum), power steering, power convertible top and Air Conditioning.
Chevrolet produced the Chevelle from 1964 through 1977 that included three generations of models. They soon became “America’s most popular mid-size car.” The Super Sport (SS) versions were made through the 1973 season and represented Chevrolet’s dominance of the muscle car era. In 1968 the Chevelle underwent a body change to a more tapered front fender with a rounded beltline and in 1970 it was squared up a bit more and a new interior was introduced – all represented on this car.
The Super Sport package included special exterior brightwork with SS-badging, special wheels, special vinyl bucket seating, floor console with shifter and special dash and instrument cluster. The SS-396 Chevelle also included a 350-horsepower Turbo-Jet 396 V-8, special suspension, special hood, black accented grille, rear-bumper insert, and special wheels encompassing a wider tire. Functional hood lock pins complete the SS package.
Easily recognizable as a member of the muscle-car royal family, this Chevelle SS is a standout finished in Dark Blue Metallic and white “SS” paint stripes – a stunning combination against the white interior and white top. The paint was resprayed by a prior owner a few years back, and it shows very well. There are no knicks, scrapes or dents, and in our inspection of the body and inside panels we found no evidence of body filler or rust. Overall the chassis and body are in very good condition.
The current owner saved receipts for over $5,000. in parts and labor for mechanical work done just over the past year. This car is fully sorted and serviced - and it starts, runs and drives exactly as it should. Among these are larger, upgraded rotors and calipers, Edelbrock intake manifold and new 4-barrel carburetor, power steering gear box, new fuel tank, and new fuel pump.
The interior is in very good condition overall. The convertible vinyl top and boot are brand-new and in perfect condition. The power top works very well, raising and lowering the top smoothly. The white vinyl seats and door panels – while not new – are free of any undue wear, tear or rips and they are soft and comfortable. There are no missing interior parts and everything works. The dash and center console are original and in very good condition.
Such well-preserved cars like this are very difficult to find. This one has been treated to a “partial restoration” which included the new paint and SS-Stripes, new top and boot, and the engine (a correct 396 replacement engine) was rebuilt and refreshed. The blue paint, white stripes, and white interior top combination on the car are year and model correct – however during the repaint or restoration the body plate went missing, but these are believed to be the original paint colors.
The package is completed with the proper spare tire cover in hounds-tooth vinyl, jack, and owner’s manual. From a forensic point of view, especially considering the original chrome, interior, dash and markings, it is believed that this car is a genuine “396 Super Sport.”
